From time to time over the course of a few months, your computer may start to run a little slower than normal. This is usually from the various amounts of software that have been installed on the system over the span of that OS’s life. Apart from wiping out the entire computer and starting over, is there another solution?

Thankfully yes, it is called MSConfig. To do this you will need to go to the start menu in the lower left of the screen and type “msconfig” then hit enter. A settings dialog box with various tabs will come up. The two tabs that you will want to focus on are the startup and services tabs. In the services tab, you will want to make sure that the hide Microsoft Services box is checked. That way you don’t inadvertently turn off something you need to run windows properly.

With the exception of those Microsoft services, all of the objects listed can be turned off. Disabling these startup apps and services, the computer will have less to process and load at startup. Resulting in faster boot times and better system performance in general.
Once you’ve finished disabling what you are going to disable, hit Apply and OK on the window. A dialog box will come up asking you to restart. Check the Box that shows don’t remind me again. This way it won’t remind you things were disabled on the last boot up. Depending on how much was disabled, you should see quite a bit of performance increase, especially in boot time.

In general it is always best practice to leave anything that isn’t a core startup or isn’t needed at every boot unchecked. Many applications that by default want to start on windows login will significantly slow down your response time on login.
